Why I Should Have Access to an AED at All Times by Tom Senkus

If you’ve been making sure that you're prepared for a disaster, have you made sure that an AED is part of your emergency kit?
You may have seen an AED in office buildings or workplaces and wondered what they’re for. AED is short for an Automated External Defibrillator, and is a reliable tool used by both trained emergency responders and every-day bystanders to prolong a victim’s out-of-hospital survival. In this article, we’ll cover a number of reasons why you should be familiar with these devices and why you should have access to an AED at all times .
AEDs Save Lives!
An AED is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest – which can be fatal – by delivering an electrical shock to maintain the heart’s rhythm.
These devices are a sophisticated technologically, however they’re relatively easy-to-use with proper training. AEDs can both analyze the condition of an individual’s heart rhythm and, when necessary, deliver a defibrillation (an electrical shock) to help the heart reestablish an effective rhythm. What makes an AED an indispensable tool for cardiac arrest is that it is the only way to restore a regular heart rhythm. And with the prevalence of heart attacks—the precursor to cardiac arrest—using an AED can help save a life.
Considering that a sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, which affected 1.5 million Americans in 2018 (or an incident every 2 minutes per day), it follows that you should have access to an AED to prevent death. And just to emphasize how important an AED is to survival rates: the odds of survival decrease approximately 10% for every minute that defibrillation is delayed. Of course, using a defibrillator is best left to those who’ve gone through professional training, but your participation can make the difference between life and death.
Certification is Easy!
Now that you’re aware of why AEDs should be accessible as part of your workplace or part of your disaster preparedness, you should know that learning how to use an AED can be made possible by signing up for courses offered by the American Red Cross through Premier Health and Safety. You can learn from trained professionals and through online courses, which makes it a perfect option for those who live busy lives. The blended learning approach can help you tackle classwork on your own time, demonstrating your knowledge to a trainer to obtain certification. Or, if you have spare time, the full-service course only last 3 hours—a short sacrifice for ensuring that you can save a life in a time of need.
Also, it should be noted that the American Red Cross offers courses that not only include AED training, but allow individuals to gain CPR knowledge—a vital skill in today’s uncertain world.
